Jac Schaeffer, creator of Wandavision and Agatha All Along for Marvel Television and screenwriter of Black Widow, is developing a new Stargate TV series for Amazon MGM Studios.
Schaeffer has signed a three year deal with Amazon MGM to produce TV and movies for the platform, fresh off a similar contract for Marvel Television. A writers’ room is expected for the project to open soonin the near future. Schaeffer will be joined by Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell from Safehouse Pictures as executive producers for the project.
This is Amazon’s second try at a Stargate series. The last one, launched by former Stargate Atlantis co-executive producer, got axed last June by Amazon when they decided that while his vision might delight existing fans of the franchise, it would do little to bring in new ones.
The new Stargate project has a fair chance of getting out of development hell, thanks in no small part to Schaeffer’s great track record for creating hit TV series. It was Schaeffer who brought us the smash hit series Wandavision via Marvel Studios and Disney+. It was the first Marvel Cinematic Universe series to premiere on Disney+, with Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprising their roles as Wanda and Vision from the Marvel films. The series received 23 Primetime Emmy Awards nominations and won for three of them .
Schaeffer’s Wandavision spinoff Agatha All Along starred Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, reprising her role from WandaVision. Schaeffer was the showrunner, writer, and executive producer on that show.
Stargate stands as an enduring genre franchise, originally launched as a 1994 movie starring James Spader and Kurt Russell. The film was followed by the hit series Stargate SG-1, which aired for 10 seasons and starred Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge. Its spinoff Stargate Atlantis then aired for five more seasons between 2004 and 2008.
