As darkness looms over the land, the pressure mounts to restore the fading sun. A young royal, burdened by the expectations of divinity and lacking traditional powers, seeks an innovative path forward. By combining mechanical ingenuity with ancient relics, an attempt is made to forge artificial light and provide hope for a desperate nation.
This stop motion animation short, produced as a thesis project by Esper Jyn (Thianrawit Varapongsittikul), was created with the goal of bringing awareness to the rising global problem of the Kikikomori (a form of withdrawal from social life, often seeking extreme degrees of isolation and confinement) through a fantasy lens. It follows the spiritual journey of a Tinkerer Princess and her mysterious retainer to find a way to bring light back to a sunless world.
It’s a loose adaptation of a personal project Esper Lyn is working on, one that crosses the boundaries between comics and animation.
We found it charming, and a bit of needed hopium in these, our darkened times. We hope you find it equally hopeful and encouraging. – ed.
