Sony has confirmed that an animated adaptation of the hit video game Bloodborne is on its way, marking one of PlayStation’s most ambitious screen projects to date. The announcement came during Sony’s panel at CinemaCon, where Sanford Panitch, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, said the film will remain “very true” to the game’s dark and violent essence (and will be R-Rated, an unusual tack for an animated film).

The project is part of Sony’s expanding slate of video game adaptations. They’re already working on a film based on The Legend of Zelda, directed by Wes Ball, with Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Bragason set to play Link and Princess Zelda (not each of them in both roles—that would be weird).

The film is being produced by franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

Bloodborne

According to Variety, Lyrical Media, the parent company of Lyrical Animation, will co-finance the Bloodborne film alongside Sony Pictures. The movie will be co-produced by PlayStation Productions, Lyrical Animation, and creator and gamer Sean McLoughlin, who has built a fan following of over 48 million online. The studio has not revealed details about the film’s storyline or cast. An official release date has also not yet been announced.

About the game Bloodborne

Released in 2015, Bloodborne is widely regarded as one of the greatest video games of all time. Developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, the game follows a lone traveler navigating a gothic city plagued by terrifying creatures and relentless danger.

Known for its high difficulty level and layered storytelling, the game has built a devoted global fan base, with players continuing to explore its mysteries years after its release.

Helldivers

Jason Momoa will star in PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures’ film adaptation of Helldivers, based on Arrowhead Game Studios’ video game franchise. Justin Lin will direct, and the pic will hit theaters on November 10, 2027.

The game debuted in 2015 and the sequel, Helldivers 2, sold more than 12 million units across PS5 and PC in the first four months after its 2024 launch. The game recently expanded to Xbox and continues to perform.

About the Game Helldivers 2

Helldivers 2‘s story centers around an elite unit of soldiers — known as Helldivers — who must battle alien creatures threatening to destroy the fictional planet of Super Earth. Like the game, it shares a lot of DNA with both Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 film Starship Troopers, specifically for its satirical tone, and the original book by the same name by Robert Heinlein upon which that film was based.

Hutch Parker is producing with PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash, and Lin through his Perfect Storm Entertainment.
