Looks like Devil May Cry is finally getting the anime treatment, and Netflix just dropped the first trailer. But perhaps the bigger headline? Kevin Conroy — the voice of Batman for over three decades — will posthumously star as VP Baines, a new character in the series. His voice kicks off the teaser, and for fans of Conroy, it’s both a gut-punch and a gift.

Conroy passed away in November 2022 at age 66, but not before finishing several final projects, including Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part 3, and now, Devil May Cry. This anime marks one of his last performances, and if what we hear in the trailer is any indication, it’s not a role to miss.

What Is Devil May Cry?

For those unfamiliar, Devil May Cry is one of Capcom’s most iconic action franchises. First launched in 2001 for the PlayStation 2, the game redefined the “stylish action” genre with over-the-top swordplay, gun-fu, and larger-than-life demons. You play as Dante, a half-demon, half-human demon hunter with a sharp tongue, a big sword, and an even bigger grudge. Across five main games and multiple spin-offs, the series has built a cult following for its fast-paced combat, gothic aesthetic, and deeply weird lore.

This isn’t Devil May Cry’s first stab at animation — a 12-episode anime series aired back in 2007, but it was largely disconnected from the main game storylines and met with mixed reviews. The new Netflix series looks like a fresh take, with better animation, and a story that seems more in tune with the games’ high-energy style.

What We Know About the Netflix Series

The voice cast includes Scout Taylor-Compton as Mary, Hoon Lee as White Rabbit, Chris Coppola as Enzo, and Johnny Yong Bosch as Dante himself — no stranger to anime and gaming fans (Bosch previously voiced Nero in Devil May Cry 4 and 5 and took over as Ichigo in Bleach).

Here’s the official Netflix synopsis:
“Sinister forces are working to open a portal between the human and demon worlds. Standing in their way is Dante, an orphaned demon hunter for hire, who has no idea the fate of both realms rests on his shoulders.”

Producer and showrunner Adi Shankar — known for Dredd, Killing Them Softly, and The Voices — is running the show. Shankar has long been vocal about wanting to adapt beloved game franchises and has previously produced Castlevania for Netflix. He’s also (in theory) still attached to that long-rumored Assassin’s Creed series, but that’s been in development limbo since 2017.

Animation is being handled by Studio Mir, the South Korean powerhouse behind The Legend of Korra and X-Men ’97, which bodes well for action scenes and visual quality.

Devil May Cry will hit Netflix on April 3, 2025. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the franchise or coming for Conroy’s final performance, this series looks like it may finally give DMC the adaptation it deserves.
