“You can’t promise I’ll be safe.” “I can. I will. I do.” The Doctor brings a new companion out into the universe.
The Doctor’s newest companion is Andor’s Varada Sethu. She’s apparently been whisked away on an adventure with the Doctor by accident (not the first time that’s happened — see Catherine Tate ). It stands to reason that much of what follows will be the Doctor trying to get her home again, and in one piece.
This is the best look we’ve been given yet on what we can expect from the so-called “Season 2” of Doctor Who (they’re caling it that even though there have been 40 seasons of the show so far if you include NCuti Gatwa‘s last one, which Disney is calling “Season 1”).
Sethu’s character is a nurse named Belinda Chandra. And as much as Chandra wants to go home, there’s something more afoot. One of the biggest problems, in addition to the usual “broken TARDIS” shenanigans, is that no humans they encounter seem to know that there is such a planet as Earth. The Doctor and Belinda are going to have to take the long way round.
At least so far that extended trip back looks pretty fun! There’s some killer teases here: new monsters, new dangers, endless new looks for Gatwa to save the day in. We even get another fleeting glimpse at Alan Cumming’s animated new villain Mr Ring-a-Ding, who forces the Doctor and his companion into a two-dimensional cartoon world, where everything is flat, animated on sixes, and waistlines are impossible.
Doctor Who returns April 12th on BBCiPlayer in the UK and Disney+ where available.
