What is the Frosty Fight Club?

As a member of the gaming staff of Scifi.radio, I, in my Discord identity as Mr.SilentChaos, wanted to create a primer for a new gaming Discord I helped found. The Frosty Fight Club is a inclusive, yet primarily retro, gaming community that loves old games being played in new ways using social media. We host weekly Discord events: ‘Tatsu’ and ‘Tetraminos’ (our Fighting and Puzzle game weekly) and ‘Friday Night Friendlies’ (our weekly Open Lobby Twitch stream) where we play random games of all kinds, live, and have a good time doing it.

Who are we and why did we start this community?

LordSmeef and I wanted to make a place where everyone was welcome and could play games without being judged for how good or bad they are at them. Our goal was to celebrate the games and the community of people we play those games with, to lift each other up in our mutual enjoyment.

After the pandemic lockdown, I missed running in-person events in my local area. I used to run a weekly event called ‘Nerd’s Night Out’ at local businesses for a few years and it was good until it couldn’t be sustained anymore. I was left feeling empty and missing a place for me to ‘call home’. This displaced feeling caused me to feel as if I had lost my spark for playing games, for a time.

Eventually, I began reconnecting with people from my online communities and met LordSmeef. We shared common ground and agreed we should do something retro. Our first effort was called ‘Frosty Fights’. This evolved into the ‘Frosty Fight Club’ since this was more broad and open to interpretation. We didn’t want to be pigeonholed into just fighting games, as we planned to expand our efforts into supporting a diverse collection of retro-focused games for our community of gamers.

Our community has been wildly successful and at this point, we’ve run over 100 tournaments, had over 5,000 players, crowned over 100 champions, given away over $2,000 in prizes, and more. We feel the Frosty Fight Club is on the precipice of a new era in social gaming. We have plans to help this community grow and help to support Scifi.radio along the way.

This is where you all come in! Help us collaborate and fund raise with Scifi.radio and enjoy Frosty Fight Club, a community which has only grown in the eighteen months we have been actively developing and expanding it.

Interviewing: Sakuwantstofight

To help familiarize new community members with the Frosty Fight Club and its leadership, I’ll be posting short interviews. Kicking things off, let me introduce you to our YouTube editor and resident Brit, ‘Sakuwantstofight’.

Tell us about yourself, Saku. What do you enjoy gaming-wise? What made you want to join the Frosty Fight Club server and eventually join the staff?

“I’m ‘Sakuwantstofight’ or Nate. I am a 33 year old dude from the United Kingdoms who runs a small YouTube channel of the same name. I enjoy a lot of visual media such as movies, anime and manga. As far as games, my absolute favorite genres are mostly ‘bullet hells’ (a subgenre of shoot ’em up video games featuring a large number of projectiles that need to be dodged), fighters and first-person shooters.

“Why I joined? Curiosity. I didn’t know anything about Frosty Fight Club at first but I saw they were holding a ‘Twinkle Star Sprites’ tourney and I thought… Why not? I had no intention of becoming staff but I accepted at first but I left the staff for undisclosed reasons. I came back because the boss needed someone to work on the Frosty Fight Club YouTube channel, so I took the helm.”

Is there anything you work on outside of the Frosty Fight Club that you’d like to share? Hobbies, Creations, Special Skills, etc?

Crafted from PVC and ABS for a polished finish, ARTFX J figures put fan-favorite characters in dynamic poses.

“Aside from video editing my channel and being addicted to Instagram, I enjoy my snake Trini, music and collecting stuff like Fumos (plushy characters figures) and Anime figurines.

What is your favorite memory, so far, of being part of the Frosty Fight Club? What would you say your toughest time/day was also?

“My favorite memory of Frosty, eh? I would have to say the Virtual Fighter 3TB tournament that was held last year was the most fun. As for the toughest day, yeah, let’s not get into that.”

If you could write an article or do a video on one topic, what would it be and why? What makes this so special that everyone needs to know about it?

“Honestly, I have no idea what topic I would write about or make a video on. Right now, I am focused on getting 500 subscribers for my channel. After that, I may have some idea of what I think is important enough to write about. It’s probably going to be a while.

Do you have any questions for me?

“Yes, I have one: ‘Which one fighting game archtype do you like the least?’”

Interviewer: “Okay, I’ll bite: I feel that games that rely on a ‘mechanic’ to get over are usually bad games. Games shouldn’t pass/fail on a sole game mechanic. The systems within most fighting games should be able to be more flexible and allow for better variety and unique opportunities for the developer to subvert expectations of players, keeping games less predictable. Do you have any last words for the readers?

“Himeno from Chainsaw Man deserved better.”
