This is everything: watch the new trailer for the new Netflix live-action series Avatar: The Last Airbender. It completely expunges the horror that was the M. Night Shyamalan’s theatrical feature by the same name from our collective memories. This is the live action version of the beloved story that we’ve all been waiting for.

The story of Aang, the last Airbender, and how he came to be the Avatar and the saviour of the world against the evil ambitions of the Fire Nation, is brought faithfully to life before our eyes.

Scene after scene in this trailer comes straight from the original 2005 animated series. It is almost as though they just used the animated series as a storyboard for the live action offering.

The visuals are sumptuous, the characterizations are on point, and the story, well, they have a series and they don’t have to jam it into two hours, so this is going to be a lot of fun.

They even went and got the guy who did the voicework for the repeating comedy role of the Cabbage Merchant – you know the one, every time the Avatar and his friends would visit a new town and get into trouble, invariably there would be a chase scene involving the destruction of a cabbage cart vendor’s livelihood. The cry of “My Cabbages!” is The Last Airbender‘s version of the Wilhem Scream.

The brainchild of Albert Kimm Avatar: The Last Airbender is a faithful live action retelling of the animated series created for Nickolodean. It stars Kiawentilo as Katara, Gordon Cormier as Aang, Ian Ousley as Sokka, and features Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai and Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko.

The whole thing kicks off on Netflix with its first episode on February 22, 2024.

We can hardly wait.
