BBC In Talks with Disney to Stream Doctor Who on Disney+

Walt Disney Co. is in discussions with the British Broadcasting Corp. about acquiring the streaming rights to a new Doctor Who series (we presume it’s the upcoming series starring Ncuti Gatwa).

The people with knowledge of the situation want to remain anonymous, since the meetings are private. The talks are in their early stages, but if they do reach an agreement, the Disney+ streaming service would allow the program could be shown internationally, while still being broadcast on the BBC.

Disney is always on the lookout to add established entertainment properties to the lineup for its global streaming service. The Streaming Wars are brutal, with the largest producers deciding they have enough content on their own to start their own streaming services, to the great frustration of the viewing audience.

The science fantasy franchise Doctor Who, which first appeared on television in 1963, follows the adventures of a time-traveling character known as the Doctor. More than a dozen actors have taken on the role, the latest being Jodie Whittaker, the first woman to do so.

The BBC announced in May that Ncuti Gatwa, a Scottish actor born in Rwanda, will star in the next installment, making him the first Black person in the title role. He also appears in Netflix Inc.’s Sex Education.
