Legendary Comic Book Writer Alan Grant Gone at 73

We regret to report that Scottish writer Alan Grant, best known for his work on Batman, Judge Dredd, and Lobo titles, has passed on at the age of 73. No cause of death has been released yet, but his widow Susan said he had been ill “for some time.” She announced his death July 21, 2022, via social media.

Alan Grant was born in Bristol, England, UK, February 9, 1949. He grew up in Midlothian, Scotland, U.K. The Inkpot award-winning writer wrote for both British and American comic book publishers. You can find his work comics published by DC, Marvel, Berserker Comics, Dark Horse, Epic Comics IPC, and BHP Comics. Alan and Susan Grant lived in Moniaive, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, U.K. Alan and Susan Grant organized the local ComicCon there.

In addition to his comic book scripting for Detective Comics, Batman, 2000 AD, Future Shock, and Blackhawk, he wrote two novels, both set in the DC universe. DC Universe: Last Sons, about Lobo, and Martian Manhunter, Superman, all of whom were the sole survivors of their home planets, and Batman: The Stone King.

Grant, with his frequent collaborator Norm Greyfogle (1960-2018), co-created several villains for Batman’s Rogues Gallery: Amygdala, the Ventriloquist, Legs, and Anarky.
