“Wonder Woman 3” is Approved with Patty Jenkins Directing

It should not come as a surprise that Warner Brothers has approved a third Wonder Woman movie. Although the second movie was only released a few days ago, audience approval has been strong enough that Warner Brothers has approved a third Wonder Woman movie, which will again star Israeli actress Gal Gadot as the Amazon superheroine. This movie will be written and directed by Patty Jenkins, who won a Hugo Award for directing the first Wonder Woman movie in 2017.

Toby Emmerich, the chairman of the Warner Bros. Pictures Group, said the third movie would be the conclusion of a  “long-planned theatrical trilogy.”

Wonder Woman 1984 was released in the USA on HBO Max and in select theaters on Christmas Day and has earned over sixteen million dollars in its domestic debut, far exceeding industry expectations and making it the best debut of any film during the pandemic. Most of the reviews have been favorable.

Wonder Woman 1984 broke records and exceeded our expectations across all of our key viewing and subscriber metrics in its first 24 hours on the service, and the interest and momentum we’re seeing indicates this will likely continue well beyond the weekend,” said Andy Forssell, Executive Vice President and General Manager, WarnerMedia Direct-to-Consumer in a statement. “During these very difficult times, it was nice to give families the option of enjoying this uplifting film at home, where theater viewing wasn’t an option.”

Wonder Woman 1984 has earned $85 million worldwide thus far. In many places, theaters are not open yet. Where they are open, the theaters are starving for fresh material. Wonder Woman 1984 may not play in theaters for a full year, as Star Wars: A New Hope did in San Diego and other towns, but now that a vaccine for the COVID-19 coronavirus is being administered it seems likely it will stay in theaters for weeks if not months.

Warner Brothers has not announced yet if the third Wonder Woman film will be set in the present day, nor if any other DC superheroes will be guest starring in the movie, nor even a guess at a release date (though we suspect we won’t see it until 2022 at the earliest).
