Free Guy is the new Ryan Reynolds new action comedy. Reynolds plays Guy, a non-player character in a video game called “Free City”, which seems to be a combination of Grand Theft Auto and Fornite. In the game, Guy is a bank teller, working along with his friend, Buddy (Get Out‘s Lil Rel Howery). When some special source code developed by programmers Milly (Killing Eve‘s Jodie Comer) and Keys (Stranger Things‘ Joe Keery) is inserted into the game by its publisher Antoine (Thor: Ragnarok‘s Taika Waititi), Guy becomes aware of his world being a video game, and begins to make himself a hero, which creates a race against time to save the game before the developers can shut it down.
Guy does things his character in the game should absolutely not be able to do, including kissing a game avatar “Molotov Girl”, who is in turn controlled by human player Milly. The film itself feels like a fusion between Ralph Breaks The Internet, The LEGO Movie, and Ready Player One – and that last one it comes by honestly, because the screenwriters are Matt Lieberman (Scoob!) and Zak Penn (Ready Player One).
Fun Facts about Free Guy
- Ryan Reynolds & Taika Waititi previously co-starred together in Green Lantern (2011). Even though they said they didn’t or in other words don’t remember it. This may be something of an inside joke, since the film did so poorly that both actors would prefer not to admit in public to having been in it.
- This is the second time Ryan Reynolds has played a character named Guy. The first time was in the animated film The Croods.
- Joe Keery previously worked with director Shawn Levy on Stranger Things (2016).
Famous YouTube gamer celebrities are set to make cameo roles in this film. Gamer stars like Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, Imane “Pokimane” Anys, and Lannan “LazarBeam” Eacott will appear as themselves while Seán “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin will voice the video game character Q*bert in a scene where Guy and Molotov get him from a download.
In addition to starring in the film, Reynolds is also producing along with Shawn Levy, (who also serves as the film’s director), Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Adam Kolbrenner.
Additional cast members include, Sports Illustrated model Camille Kostek and Channing (G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra) Tatum, as well as YouTube personalities, Sean “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin, Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, Iman “Pokimane” Anys, and Lannan “LazarBeam” Eacott.
Free Guy was originally slated for release on July 3, 2020, and has now been ostensibly rescheduled for release on December 11. With so many cinema chains shutting down due to the impact of the pandemic, though, it’s uncertain as to whether it will actually release on that date.
