Final Trailer: ‘Black Widow’

This is it, Black Widow will be in the theaters in just seven and a half weeks, and the final trailer is here. Watch Natasha Romanoff and her family take on the Big Bad.

A great hero needs a great villain, and it’s only now in this final trailer that we get the big reveal that this film’s villain is the Taskmaster, who runs the elite training camp that produced both Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson) and her sister Yelena Balova (Florence Pugh). It’s a family affair, as they and their father Red Guardian / Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour) take on one of the most dangerous non-metahumans in the Marvel Universe.

In the comics, Taskmaster has injected himself with a drug that unlocks the full procedural capabilities of the human mind. Thus, he can instantly absorb the combat abilities of anyone he can see in action (but at the cost of losing his own personal experiences – the more he learns about others’ fighting styles, the more of his own personal memories he loses, because his memory space is finite.)

We don’t know if that’s true in this cinematic incarnation of the character, but he does look pretty darned dangerous.

The film looks like it’ll be worth the price of a ticket, but we don’t think it will be a blockbuster like Captain Marvel was. There are a few reasons we think so.

First, the character of Black Widow dies in Avengers: Endgame. Second, the appearance of Natasha Romanoff’s family with no foreshadowing in earlier films seems forced and a bit awkward, so the whole family bonding thing feels a bit weak as a plot premise as well. Thirdly, the trailer itself appears actually a bit hastily kitted together, in that comic book movies are now so commonplace that it appears formulaic, bringing forth nothing that we haven’t seen a dozen or more times before in other comic book movie trailers.

All in all, Black Widow looks like a spy thriller chase movie on steroids, and should be a lot of fun regardless, and fills in some of the back history between the events of Avengers: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War.

It makes its debut on May 1, 2020.
