DC Comics, Dark Horse Pull Out of Emerald City Comic Con Due to COVID-19 Coronavirus Concerns

DC and Dark Horse Comics have canceled their plans to attend Emerald City Comic Con March 12 – 15 in Seattle, Washington, after several deaths occurred in the state of Washington due to the COVID-19 coronavirus.

“As the health and safety of our employees are always our primary concerns, DC staffers will not be attending conventions during the month of March,” DC told The Hollywood Reporter. “Future convention attendance will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, factoring in the latest information from a variety of organizations, including the CDC, WHO, U.S. State Department and local health agencies.”

Dark Horse Comics made a similar statement on Twitter, citing concerns for the well-being of their own employees.

Just yesterday, Warner Bros. also cancelled the New York premiere for its Superman: Red Son animated movie. The event was originally scheduled to take in New York City on March 16. Once again, the concerns were over the Corona Virus.

Marvel Entertainment will not be affected, and never had plans to bring talent or execs to ECCC. As a result, the publisher has not made any announcements regarding the convention.

Notably, several people in Washington state have already died from the virus. The death toll continues to rise as more cases and deaths are confirmed in the state.

Emerald City Comic Con is still scheduled for March 12 through 15 in Seattle, as per the official website. The convention issued a statement regarding coronavirus concerns, with promises to proactively monitor the situation.

We at SCIFI.radio share our concerns regarding COVID-19 and while their absence from ECCC is regretable, we think they made the right decision. They’re certainly not alone either – Penguin Random House also canceled their plans to appear there.

We also remind you that SCIFI.radio is there for you to enjoy and help you stay connected to the fannish community, even if you can’t get to the convention this year.
