Video of the Day: “Sailor Moon” Theme on Traditional Japanese Instruments

This may be the best thing you see all day.

Sailor Moon is easily one of the most popular and recognizable anime series – and characters – in the entire world. Today’s video is of a performing group playing the theme of the Toei Animation series on traditional Japanese instruments. This is the Sailor Moon theme as you probably have never heard it before.

Be sure to pause the SCIFI.radio music stream using the control at the upper right before you watch this. Dueling soundtracks aren’t as much fun as you’d think.

Sailor Moon first appeared as a manga in a monthly comic book in Japan called Nakayoshi in 1991 as  ???????????? Bish?jo Senshi S?r? M?n (the original title translation was “Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon”). It ran for six years, but by 1992 it was already so popular that it was made into an animated series by Toei Animation. The comic ran until 1996, and the animation ran until 1997.

The manga has sold over 35 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling sh?jo manga series. The franchise has also generated $5 billion in merchandise sales.

The fact that you can take something like this and continue to create charming and fascinating things like this music video shows the strength and power of Sailor Moon. Sometimes a daydream can become something very real. The best daydreams can become something amazing.
