Happy Birthday to José Luis García-López

by Aly Runke, contributing writer

We, America, are a nation that grew up on certain ideas, images of heroism, and hope. One of those images is DC Comics’ Superman. And when the average person thinks of Superman it is highly probable they are visioning the Superman styled by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez. Garcia-Lopez was born in 1948 in Spain, before moving to Argentina. When he came to America in 1974, he got a job with DC Comics and is most famous for his work penciling Superman. Today this hero-maker turns 66 years old. We have much to thank him for and even more to celebrate on today his birthday.

Garcia-Lopez worked at DC from the 1970s into the 90s and his style of the most iconic superheroes in the world is used as the stock images and style guides for DC merchandise even today. He has been nominated for awards for his artistry, including the 1992 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards; Best Artist and the 1997 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards; Best Penciller/Inker or Penciller/Inker Team. He is a very modest man who simply loves to be a part of the storytelling process, he likes working on comics over licensing projects, and really enjoys penciling and coloring his work. He’s a quiet man that doesn’t realize his own impact, but that’s probably part of the reason we love him.

Garcia-Lopez’s art is easy to recognize by sight, but in fact, he never worked on any storyline for any substantial amount of time. His compiled work  is a mish-mash of characters, story lines, etc. This man dabbled everywhere, his style fitting into all types of genre of comic. He is most remembered for his work on Superman, but he has contributed much more than the styling for this American icon: working on many a DC project (Batman, Wonder Woman, Teen Titans, and Flash, to name a few) and even penciling a cover for Marvel! This man is everywhere; how could his style not be emulated? It is after all truly the stuff of our childhood and fan-based love for DC’s iconic characters. So once again Happy Birthday and thank you, Mr. Garcia-Lopez!!!
