Mr. Levine is not leaving the game industry, however. Far from it. In an open letter on the Irrational Games web site, Mr. Levine stated that he wants to move in a new direction with a new, smaller and more nimble studio, producing new games with engaging storylines and replayable narratives.
He’s going to do this by transitioning to a smaller team and a less complex management structure, but with a more direct relationship with the gaming community. This will be done under the auspices of the Irrational Games publisher, Take Two Interactive. The games created by the new company will be delivered to the hands of the gamers through exclusively digital methods, i.e., no boxes on shelves in game stores – new games from Levine’s team will be purchasable online only.
Irrational Games, based in Boston, Massachusetts, is about to roll out the last DLC package for Bioshock Infinite. The BioShock franchise is one of the most successful in history, making something around half a billion dollars over its lifetime so far.
