San Francisco’s ‘Batkid’ – How It All Turned Out

November 15, 2013 was the day  thousands of San Franciscans turned out to cheer on the Batkid as he saved the city from the supervillians who came there to wreak havoc.

Miles Scott, age 5, is in remission from leukemia, and, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation,  his wish to be Batkid for the day came true. More than 7,000 people actively participated in making it all happen, and thousands more lined the streets to cheer him on.

Miles, who lives in Tulelake in far Northern California, was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 18 months old, ended treatments in June and is now in remission.

The City of San Francisco, though, incurred costs of about $105,000 during the amazing day-long event, but the newest twist in the story is that the heroism isn’t over. Philanthropists John and Marcia Goldman are picking up the city’s $105,000 tab for allowing Miles to fight villains and rescue a damsel in distress as the Caped Crusader.

City officials say most of the $105,000 in public funds went toward renting a sound system, video screens and other equipment to accommodate the surprisingly large crowds that turned out to see the BatKid.
