Earth is slated for destruction by aliens who want to build an intergalactic bypass who do not understand us even though they can all do credible singing impressions of Ethyl Merman who tend to stutter under pressure when confronted by the army, navy, air force, space force and/or marines , but scientists create a new weapon which does not work and then they kill us all.
