Isabella Moner as Dora the Explorer. It's hard to tell which one is cuter. Not a spoof nor "gritty remake" (see the extra video at the end of this article) - it's Dora and the Lost City of Gold. What if Dora the Explorer was a fully realized character with a back story, two missing parents lost in the jungle, and a real blue pet monkey named Boots that lived in her backpack? https://www.youtube.com/watch?vgUTtJjV852c There is no way you can watch this trailer and not see a cartoon character with a pet monkey trying to take stolen things back from Swiper, her somewhat tame and rather vanilla arch-nemesis. This time, though, she's a real person. Sent off to the city to stay with her cousin Diego, she's kidnapped (along with a handful of her classmates) and taken back to the jungle. The villains are after the fabled Lost City of Gold, and Dora's parents (played by Pia Miller and Michael Peña) are in serious trouble. Yes, it's made for kids, and with Dora as the lead character, it would have to be. The film was produced by Nickolodeon, and Dora was their creation back in 2000 for the Nickolodeon cable channel. Yes, Swiper is in the movie, but we never see him directly. He's voiced by Benecio Del Toro. Danny Trejo is in this film as well, and we thought he'd play the heavy. Nope. He's the monkey. Isabela Moner, Eugenio Derbez, Michael Peña, Eva Longoria, and Danny Trejo star in Dora and the Lost City of Gold. From Paramount Pictures, it swings into theaters August 2. At first we thought the whole thing was a joke, because we'd seen this all before, in College Humor's clever and surprisingly entertaining Dora the Explorer and the Destiny Medallion. This version of Dora was played by Ariel Winter, and was played for deadpan laughs. We can't help wondering if this parody series wasn't the genesis for the real movie.
