The nominations for the 78th Emmy Awards landed on July 8, and science fiction and fantasy have crowded the front row. Two of the five most-nominated programs of the entire slate are ours: Apple TV’s supernatural horror-comedy Widow’s Bay with 19 nods, and Pluribus, Vince Gilligan’s science-fiction follow-up to Breaking Bad, with 18. Behind them comes a deep bench of the fantastic — Spider-Noir, Fallout, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Stranger Things, Wednesday, Alien: Earth, Murderbot, Foundation, IT: Welcome to Derry, Peacemaker, and more — turning up across more than five dozen categories. Outstanding Emerging Media Program is entirely genre this year, with all three nominees drawn from horror and science fiction.
Nothing is settled yet. The Creative Arts ceremonies run September 5 and 6, and the main telecast follows on Monday, September 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, airing on NBC and streaming on Peacock, with Mariska Hargitay hosting. Below is every category in which a science-fiction or fantasy production earned a nomination — plus a handful where the production isn’t genre but the performer is one of our own. Here’s who’s in the running.
