There’s a brand new way to tune in to SCIFI.radio, the world’s only full time science fiction and fantasy fandom radio station. We’ve been planning this for years. Finally, Twitch has created a new opportunity for online radio stations, and SCIFI.radio takes the plunge.
The Twitch.tv platform boasts over 240 million monthly active users, with about 35 million of them logging in every day. It’s probably the single biggest opportunity for expanding the station there is, but getting the technology to work in a way that we could actually afford to run it has been elusive.
It was a tough problem for us, since we have to run continously around the clock. Coming up with visuals for the station’s channel was a challenge as well, but as you can see, we have now cracked that one too.
Now when you’re on Twitch.TV, you can find SCIFI.radio on its own channel! Give us a follow when you get there, and just tune in and chill.
The visualizer is kind of special. It’s a version of the animated header you see above at the top of this page, but it’s recoded as a baby game engine. This gives it amazing new stability impossible with traditional streaming methods, and there’s a lot to keep you entertained. Watch spaceships come and go over a nighttime city skyline. The stars twinkle. The lights in the city go on and off as tiny tiny people you cannot see go about their lives. There’s even a UFO.
We’re still working out what goes on our Twitch stream versus our regular radio stream, but the Twitch version of SCIFI.radio already literally features hundreds of hours of the finest collection of science fiction and fantasy music on any radio station, anywhere in the world.
