From the inspiration of Capcom’s hugely popular horror video games comes Resident Evil, starring Austin Abrams.

The film stars Austin Abrams, Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, and Kali Reis.

It kicks off with the classic horror plot line of being stranded in a strange place far from home. The protagonist, a medical courier, has car trouble and getting stuck out in the middle of nowhere.

There’s what looks like an abandoned house, but it is absolutely not abandoned. Instead, it’s filled to the brim with horror after horror, and our heroic courier must cope with all of it in a fight to survive.

Hey, it’s based on a video game. We’re not getting a deep story from this. It’s a popcorn film with a budget.

Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film. Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, and PlayStation Productions are also producing. This makes the 12th film in the Resident Evil franchise. Six of them starred Milla Jovovich.

Resident Evil (known as Biohazard in Japan) launched in 1996, creating the “survival horror” genre with a focus on resource management, puzzles, and atmospheric terror. Created by Shinji Mikami and inspired by Capcom’s Sweet Home, the series has evolved from fixed-camera, pre-rendered backgrounds into over-the-shoulder action-horror and first-person perspectives.

The Classic Era (1996–2001): Resident Evil (1996), RE2 (1998), RE3: Nemesis (1999), and Code: Veronica (2000) established the Umbrella Corporation, T-Virus, and iconic characters like Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield.

Action-Horror Shift (2002–2012): Resident Evil 4 (2005) revolutionized the series with over-the-shoulder action, while RE5 and RE6 moved further into action-packed co-op gameplay.

There have been ten major games based on the franchise since 2002, with the most recent being Resident Evil Village in 2021. There have also been spinoffs and variations, including three multi-player titles. The series has sold over 170 million units as of March 2025, making it Capcom’s best-selling franchise.

Columbia Pictures will release Resident Evil in theaters on September 18, 2026.
