A live-action television series based on Lee Falk’s The Phantom is in development, with filmmaker Reginald Hudlin (Candy Cane Lane, Sidney) attached to direct and produce. The project is currently in the early stages at King Features, the property’s owner.
The Phantom, debuting in comic strips ninety years ago, holds a unique place in genre history as arguably the first costumed superhero. The character has seen renewed interest in recent years, spurred by digital editions and the critically-acclaimed Phantom 2040 webcomic by Alex Segura, which offers a contemporary reimagining of the classic mythology.
This television adaptation is part of a broader expansion for the franchise. Mad Cave Comics is set to launch a new Phantom comic book series in 2025, with further releases planned over the next two years. King Features also announced plans for a significant immersive location-based entertainment experience, details of which will be revealed later this year.
Hudlin’s involvement brings a seasoned comic book voice to the project. He previously wrote issues of Marvel’s Black Panther and currently co-owns Milestone Media, with a feature film adaptation of their Static Shock character in development. His understanding of the source material is seen as a key asset.

Owned by Hearst, The Phantom franchise boasts a global readership of more than 29 million people, with key international markets including The Nordics, Australia and New Zealand, Brazil, the U.K. and Europe, and India.
The project signals a renewed focus on The Phantom as a multi-platform property, potentially introducing the Ghost Who Walks to a new generation of fans. Further updates will be provided as the series progresses through development.
