40 years ago, Mel Brooks made us a promise: that there would be a sequel to the sci-fi parody film Spaceballs, tentatively to be called Spaceballs: The Search for More Money.

Well—it looks like he found the money.

Mel Brooks, the producer and co-star of the original film, is 99 years old. This has apparently not slowed him down very much.

The new film, apparently to be hilariously called Spaceballs: The New One, is being directed by Josh Greenbaum, with writers Mel Brooks, Josh Gad and Ronny Graham, and produced by Brooks, Gad and Jeb Brody. It’ll star Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, his father Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis (coming out of retirement) as Dark Helmet, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, Mel Brooks himself, Michael Winslow (the guy who’s made a career out of making sound effects with his mouth) as the Radar Tech, and a lot more.

Noteworthy by his absence from the cast list is Tim Russ, famous for his one liner in the first film as one of the spaceballs coming the desert with a giant afro-pick, saying “We ain’t found SH*T.” We think they missed a bet there, and we think Russ (who went on to portray the vulcan science officer Tuvok aboard the starship Voyager in the Star Trek series by the same name) might have done it if asked.

Spaceballs: The New One is due out in 2027.
