The sequel to the 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie is almost here.
It’s the first sequel to any theatrical length Super Mario movie, and there have been a few. The 2023 movie blew the lid off Nintendo’s expectations to reap a gross of $1.36B worldwide, breaking multiple box office records, including the hightest brossing film based on a video game, and becoming the first film based on a video game to gross over $1B. After the disappointing performance of the 1993 Super Mario Bros., which garnered only $38.9M worldwide after burning through a production and promotion budget of somewhere between $42-48M, Nintendo had serious doubts about doing another one.
Fun Fact: 1993’s Super Mario Bros has appeared on several lists of the worst films ever made.

They’ve really hit stride, though. This film, like the last one, is produced by Illumination, the same company behind four very successful Despicable Me films.
This film introduces Bowser Jr., and Rosalina, the Watcher of Stars, both pivotal characters in the Super Mario Galaxy console game. Brie Larson (Captain Marvel, Scott Pilgrim vs The World) plays Rosalina.
Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Pratt, Brie Larson, Benny Safdie, Jack Black, Charlie Day, Keegan Michael Key and Kevin Michael Richardson star in an Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic directed film, from a script by Matthew Fogel.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is expected to make its big theatrical screen debut on April 3, 2026.
