Heritage Auctions’ Groundbreaking Event: A Tribute to the Legacy of Superman

Heritage Auctions is gearing up for a monumental event that will make comic book enthusiasts and collectors worldwide wish they had held onto their childhood comics. The “Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction,” set to take place on Thursday, April 4, promises to be a game-changer, offering an unparalleled collection of rare comic books, original artwork by legendary artists, and even an early pitch for one of the most iconic characters in history: Superman.

This historic issue, released in June 1938, marks the first appearance of Superman, depicted lifting a car on the cover – an image that even casual fans would recognize. Action Comics #1 not only introduced the world to the Man of Steel but also laid the foundation for the entire superhero genre.

Barry Sandoval, vice president of Heritage Auctions, emphasized the groundbreaking nature of this comic book during a media preview event on Monday. “This was uncharted territory back then,” he explained. “He’s just lifting a car, right? If you pick up a superhero comic these days, guys are throwing planets around or flying through a star or whatever. But this was just something unlike kids had ever seen up to that point.”

The original print run of Action Comics #1 exceeded 200,000 copies, primarily purchased by children who, as Sandoval humorously noted, likely treated the comics as kids typically do. “I’m sure there are copies of these the kids read in the bathtub back then,” he quipped. “And there were a heck of a lot of copies that moms just threw in the trash.”

Today, only 100 copies of Action Comics #1 are known to exist, making them incredibly rare and highly sought-after by collectors. The copy featured in the Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction is believed to be one of the best-preserved in the world, and bidding has already surpassed an astounding $5 million. This figure eclipses the previous record held by a copy of Amazing Fantasy #15, which featured the first appearance of Spider-Man and was sold by Heritage Auctions in 2021.

Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in 1938, Superman has become a global phenomenon, transcending the pages of comic books to become a cultural icon. Alongside Mickey Mouse, Superman is one of the two most recognizable characters in the world, with a legacy that spans over eight decades.

The story of Superman’s creation is a fascinating one. Siegel and Shuster, two high school students from Cleveland, Ohio, initially conceived the character as a villain with telepathic powers. However, they soon reimagined him as a heroic figure, drawing inspiration from biblical heroes like Samson and Moses, as well as fictional characters like Doc Savage and John Carter of Mars. After several rejections, their persistence paid off when Detective Comics (later known as DC Comics) agreed to publish their creation in Action Comics #1.
