Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa Awarded Honorary Degree

At a graduation ceremony on July 2, 2022, Ncuti Gatwa was awarded an honorary degree from his old theater school.

To the delight of the graduating class, the actor from Sex Education was honored during the event alongside Outlander’s Sam Heughan from Outlander. The actor, born in Rwanda and reared in Edinburgh, later enrolled at the RCS in Glasgow and earned a BA in acting there in 2013.

The celebration today also honored renowned composer, performer, and songwriter Errollyn Wallen as well as Marin Alsop, the first woman to conduct a significant American orchestra. Jeffery Sharkey, the RSC’s principal, posted a photo of Ncuti and Errolyn together on social media and wrote that it was “great to welcome” the two for their honorary degrees.

Jodie Whittaker, current holder of the role of the Doctor on the popular BBC science fantasy program Doctor Who, will be passing the torch to Gatwa next year, Gatwa, 28, was all smiles and square-shouldered in his cap and gown, posing beside a street sign that read “Twinned with Gallifrey,” as a nod to his pending role.

Fans are excited for what they believe will be the resurgence of the popular BBC sci-fi show, as iconic showrunner Russell T Davies is returning as well.Ncuti Gatwa will be a very different Doctor, just as Jodie Whittaker was before him. His run as the 14th Doctor will air in 2023.
