The Wrap announced, Yassir Lester, has been named head writer for Marvel’s upcoming Armor Wars series on Disney+. Yassir Lester may not be a household name, but that may change if Disney’s Armor Wars is successful. Yassir Lester is a stand-up comedian, an actor, a scriptwriter, and a producer.
He has worked as a supervising producer on Black Monday and Kenan. He has been a scriptwriter on The Carmichael Show, Girls, Mr. Pickles, Loudermilk, Kenan, and Earth to Ned. Lester was executive story editor for Black Monday and story editor for both Girls and The Carmichael Show. Don Cheadle and Yassir Lester have worked together in Showtime’s Black Monday with Cheadle playing Mo Monroe and Lester playing Yassir X.
Armor Wars
Armor Wars stars Don Cheadle, reprising his role as Colonel James Rhodes. Rhodes was a close friend and confidante of Tony Stark. During a dark time in Tony’s life, Rhodes wore the War Machine exoskeleton as the Iron Patriot in Iron Man 3. Rhodes would later battle alongside the Avengers. With Stark’s untimely passing during Avengers: Endgame, the worst case scenario is realized as Stark’ technology is stolen. With Stark dead, it falls to Rhodes to stop the unauthorized use of Stark’s technology by any means necessary.
The Armor Wars story adapted from the seven-issue Iron Man story arc written by David Michelinie and Bob Layton with art by Mark D. Bright and Barry Windsor-Smith and published by Marvel Comics. The arc first appears in Iron Man #225-#231 and showcased Tony Stark going to war with anyone who wore a suit of powered armor in the Marvel Universe.
Cheadle most recent appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a cameo during the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. While Cheadle has played Rhodey, one of Tony Stark’s few real friends in seven MCU movies, Terrance Howard initially appeared in the role in the first Iron Man movie.
Armor Wars will be the second of two Marvel Cinematic Universe series on Disney+ focusing on Tony Stark’s technological legacy. Ironheart, starring Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, has already started filming. There is no word whether Lester will hire other writers for the series writer’s room.
