‘Free Guy’ Trailer 2

The Twentieth Century Studios’ epic adventure-comedy Free Guy, about a bank teller named Guy who discovers he’s actually an NPC in an open-world video game, was originally to be released in December of 2020. Then the pandemic happened, and if they had released it then, it would have tanked. The new release date of August 13, 2021 gives the film a fighting chance to at least make its money back, and hopefully to do quite a bit better than that.

In Free Guy, Ryan Reynolds plays the clueless bank teller. When he’s shown the truth of his reality, he decides to become the hero of his own story – one he rewrites himself. With his limitations removed, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way, before the guy who created the game he lives in destroys it all.

The film is directed by Shawn Levy, from a story by Matt Liberman and a screenplay by Lieberman and Zak Penn. Joining Reynolds in the cast are Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Taika Waititi.

The film appears to be riding the Ready Player One bandwagon, with the whole virtual world at risk of destruction, and real world players and in-game characters interacting to create and propel the situations that make up the film’s adventurous storyline.
