Video of the Day: Katy Perry and Pikachu are ‘Electric’!

Once considered too controversial for Sesame Street due to her choice of ‘dress-up’ clothes for a video parody with Elmo of her single “Hot and Cold”, the mercurial songstress is now a member of Team Pikachu! Katy Perry and Pikachu star in this delightful and touching new music video. Perry has been a Pokemon fan since childhood, having played the original games on her GameBoy.

In commemoration of the long-running Pokemon TV series 25th anniversary, the music video for her latest single, Electric, was launched last Friday. The song is delightfully uplifting, and this time no one can find fault for her wardrobe choice. Fellow musicians on the song include Jon Bellion (who worked with her on her on Daisies from her new album, Smile), Bruce Weigner, and The Monsters & Strangerz.

In the video, Katy Perry and Pikachu travel back in time to her younger self, played by Hilo resident Meili Aspen, to help her start her music career. A younger less-evolved Pikachu is seen in his Pichu form, right be her side as they meddle with the space-time continuum to get younger Perry’s confidence a jump-start of sorts. Don’t we all wish we could go back with such an illustrious companion to help say “I choose you” to our younger selves?

The official video, shot in Hawaii, was headed by Carlos Lopez Estrada, who directed the Disney feature film Raya and the Last Dragon. Universal Music Group’s Capital Records plans to release Electric as part of a digital album. The album will also feature 14 other songs by 11 artists.

Since its premier, the video has seen more than 13 million views.

Katy Perry is no stranger to singing for video games, either, having a version of Last Friday Night to the soundtrack for The Sims 3 to commemorate her Katy Perry Sweet Treats accessory pack for the game.
