David Tennant Joins the Cast of ‘The Amazing Maurice’

David Tennant is set to join another Terry Pratchett project, following his remarkable performance in Amazon Prime’s Good Omens.

David Tennant made a fantastic Crowley in Good Omens – now he returns to the worlds of Sir Terry Pratchett, as the Doctor Who star has been confirmed for Sky’s upcoming The Amazing Maurice.

The Amazing Maurice is a CGI animated feature film adaptation of Pratchett’s best-selling Discworld novel The Amazing Maurice And His Educated Rodents. Other cast members include Hugh Laurie, Emilia Clarke, David Thewlis, Himesh Patel, Gemma Arterton and Hugh Bonneville.

Sky has also confirmed that Ariyon Bakare, Rob Brydon, Julie Atherton and Strictly star Joe Sugg will be appearing in the Sky Original animation.

The film centers on Maurice, a streetwise cat, who has the perfect money-making scam. He’s found a dumb-looking kid who plays a pipe, and his very own horde of rats – rats who, strangely, are educated and literate, so Maurice can no longer think of them as “lunch.” When Maurice and the rodents reach the stricken town of Bad Blintz, their little con goes down the drain – for someone there is playing a different tune. A dark, shadowy tune. Something very, very bad is waiting in the cellars.

The satirical take on the German fairy tale about the Pied Piper of Hamelin earned the late Pratchett widespread recognition and a string of awards, including the annual Carnegie Medal. The film is made with the full support of his estate.

The Amazing Maurice is expected to be released on Sky Cinema and NOW in 2022. Global Screen is handling world-wide distribution, but so far there is no word on distribution on other major streaming services (Netflix is a strong possibility).
