1st Look: ‘Loki’ Official Trailer

Loki is extracted from the time stream and forced to fixed all the stuff he broke when he stole the Tesseract. Hilarity ensues.

What happens when you combine a megalomaniac Norse god with an impossibly powerful alien artifact? Nothing good, you’d say, and you’d be right. In the Marvel Comics universe, the Tesseract is a container for the Space Stone, one of six Infinity Stones that predate the Universe itself. Its power is virtually limitless, and anyone holding it can travel to any place in the Universe they wish to go.

When Loki stole it in Avengers: Endgame, he created a branch to the timeline in which he is running around loose in New York with it, while the original timeline continues on as though he hadn’t. That’s where the new series from Marvel Studios and Disney+ picks up. We are not seeing Tom Hiddleston play the “personal growth” Loki in this new series. Instead, he plays the old unrepentent trickster,

So if he’s been plucked out of the time stream, who exactly has done the plucking? It’s an organization called the Timekeepers. They protect the proper flow of time. Loki is what they term a “variant”, They put him to work fixing all the damage he caused, while keeping a close, mistrustful eye on him. But who is manipulating whom?

It’s adorable that you think you could possibly manipulate me. I’m ten steps ahead of you.

– LOKI

The new series Loki showrunner is Michael Waldron, who is also doing the writing. It’s being is directed by Kate Herron, with soundtrack composed by Natalie Holt. It stars Tom Hiddleston, of course, and features Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant, Owen Wilson (who plays Mobieus M. Mobius – we assume the middle M. stands for “Mobius”), Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaka and Erika Coleman (as Florence Schaffner). The rest of the roles are simply labeled as “Actress” or “Actor”, because presumably even dropping those names would be serious spoilers.

Of particular note is the location used as the headquarters of the Timekeepers. That’s the Atlanta Marriot, home of Dragon Con. You can see it at about the 00:10 second mark (the statues are an addition).

Now that’s fan service.

The six-episode mini-series Loki makes its debut on Disney+ on June 11, 2021.
