Scriptwriter/Producer David Giler, Dead at 77

Hollywood scriptwriter and producer David Giler, best known for his work as executive producer of the Alien motion picture franchise, succumbed to cancer at the age of 77 in Bangkok, Thailand. In his long career, he wrote screenplays and stories for 18 motion pictures, TV series, and even the character dialog for a video game (Aliens: Colonial Marines). screenplays, including He was excecutive producer of the TV horror show and Tales from the Crypt.

David Kevin Giler was born January 10, 1943. He worked as a scriptwriter for over fifty years and as a producer for over four decades. He had 28 producing credits, and even directed one movie himself, The Black Bird (1975) . He was briefing married to Nancy Kwan (The World of Suzie Wong, Flower Drum Song) from 1970 to 1972.

 Filmmaker Walter Hill paid tribute to his longtime collaborator: “If you knew David, you knew he was special. The magic of his personality is hard to describe: funny, angry, extremely knowledgeable, extremely well read. It was my privilege to write and produce with him, and more importantly, to have his close and deep friendship for nearly 50 years.”

Giler began writing TV scripts for shows like The Man from U..N.C.L.E. and The Girl from U.N.C.L.E,, but moved on to movie scripts with Myra Breckenridge, Fun with Dick and Jane, and The Money Pit. As a producer, he was best known for horror projects such as Bordello of Blood, Perversions of Science, Tales from the Crypt, and the Aliens movies.

He lost his final battle on December 19, and is survived by his sister Kendall Giler.
