Soul, Pixar’s long-awaited new feature, will be premiering directly on Disney’s streaming service, Disney + on Friday, December 25, 2020. If you’re like us, you’ve been looking forward to this movie for quite a while. The original release date was June 19, 2020, later moved to November 20, 2020. In international markets where Disney+ is not available, the movie will eventually be released theatrically, probably early in 2021.

Bob Chepak, the Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, announced “We are thrilled to share Pixar’s spectacular and moving Soul with audiences direct to Disney+ in December. A new original Pixar film is always a special occasion, and this truly heartwarming and humorous story about human connection and finding one’s place in the world will be a treat for families to enjoy together this holiday season.” Some fans greeted the news with delight, that Soul was Pixar’s Christmas present to its fans.

Pete Docter, the director of Soul, Inside Out, and Up, said “The world can be an exhausting and frustrating place – but it’s also full of unexpected joys, even in seemingly mundane things. Soul investigates what’s really important in our lives, a question we’re all asking these days. I hope it will bring some humor and fun to people at a time when everyone can surely use that.”

Soul stars Jamie Foxx (Robin Hood, Django Unchained, White House Down) stars as middle-school music teacher Joe Gardner, a man who is about to have his dream come true right before his untimely death. {Apologies for the spoiler} The cast also includes Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live), Phylicia Rashad (The Cosby Show, Creed, Creed 2), Grammy & Tony winner Daveed Diggs (Lafayette in Hamilton, Andre Layton in Snowpiercer, Dos in Ferdinand), rapper Questlove of The Roots, and Angela Bassett (Queen Mother Ramonda in Black Panther) . Soul will be the first Pixar film to have an African-American protagonist. Many of the voice actors, as well the characters they portray, are African-American in real life.

Composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross composed the film’s score. Musician Jon Batise wrote the jazz songs featured in the film. One of the themes of the film is music, so expect to hear the soundtrack right here on SCIFI.radio once it’s released.
