Big Finish Audio Review – ‘Torchwood: Dissected’

Gwen (Eve Myles) pays a visit to her old pal Martha (Freema Agyeman) with a body she needs some information on. The two haven’t seen each other for a while and trust amongst them is not at it highest. They disagree on approach from UNIT’s steady methodical approach to Torchwood‘s, hunch and action. Is Gwen right to investigate when Martha thinks sometimes a dead body, is just a dead body? And are they both who they seem?

Tim Foley gives us the sort of intimate two hander Torchwood tale that the audio’s from Big Finish and producer James Goss do so well. It’s the perfect UNIT vs Torchwood (that needs to be a boxset please Big Finish) that you would want. The differences between approaches of each organisation make a great mirror for two friends who have become estranged and are finding it hard to relate to each other.

Both Agyeman and Myles are on top form and show why they are such strong female leads given the opportunity. The story by Foley is deceptively simple and tense. It goes from a back and forth between the two characters, one who sees no mystery and one who knows in her bones more is going on here, to a thrilling fight for survival in a way I won’t give away. It also cannily ties into the plot from Doctor Who and Torchwood to fill in a gap I wouldn’t have thought I needed filling in, but I’m glad they did.
