1st Look: Robert Pattinson in the Suit as Batman

This camera test appeared yesterday evening on Vimeo and shows Robert Pattinson in the Batsuit. Director Matt Reeves had posted the test on his Twitter account. It’s a really simple costume reveal, ending on Pattinson’s cowled jawline.

It’s really really dark, and we mean that in the literal sense. The first ten seconds or so, it’s basically a black screen. Then hints of red begin to emerge from the blackness, and bit by bit we see the details of the new costume – the panel details, the high color, the segmented cowl (some of it’s rigid, but around the neck it isn’t, so Pattinson won’t have the head mobility problems suffered by previous actors to play the role).

Pattinson emerges in slow motion from a murky red background to composer Michael Giacchino’s ominous score in the video. While cinematographer Greig Fraser’s camera focuses on the metallic bat insignia on Pattinson’s impressive Batsuit chest plate, it eventually moves up to show the actor’s more impressive facial profile, obscured by shadows and the mask.

But camera test is dark, and very very red, making it very hard to see any real detail. The Legends of Podcasting slowed the trailer down and stripped out the color so that we can see the surface detail in the costume much more clearly.

What is the bat symbol on the chest made of? It looks like metal. Could it be the reforged gun that killed Bruce Wayne’s parents? There’s a lot of buzz on Twitter about it, and more than a few think so.

We have a while to wait before we see much more. Filming just began on the DC superhero epic last month. It’s due in theaters June 25, 2021.

Pattinson, 33, will play a younger hero than the one played by Ben Affleck, 47, in “Justice League.” The “Twilight” star told Variety that it was “pretty humiliating” to have to have five people help him put the thing on, with two of them “squeezing my butt cheeks into the legs” to get into the suit, but that once he was in it, he felt empowered.

Always be yourself, Robert. Unless you can be Batman. Then always be Batman.
