Pokemon Card Collection Sells for $107k at Auction

A complete set of first-edition English language Pokemon cards from 1999 has sold for $107,010 at auction.

If you collected Pokemon cards back in the day and still have them, you might want to go back and have a look at them. You might just be rich.

There were 103 cards in the collection, all mint condition. Among the cards was a rare Charizard card, which alone could sell for up to $20,000, according to card authenticators. One just like it on eBay is going for a little over $2k. Charizard cards on eBay range in price up to $50,000, with $2,000 cards in abundance.

The auction house in question was Goldin Auctions, and they said in the listing that each card was graded at GEM-MT 10 — or “Gem Mint” — condition by authentication body Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), meaning the set was “virtually perfect.”

Bidding started at $25,000, with the set receiving 12 bids before the auction closed on Saturday.

The auction house noted a similar set of Pokemon cards was sold in its December 2017 holiday sale for just under $100,000, adding that demand for complete first-edition sets in high-grade condition was continuing to grow.

If you’re going back through your collection to see if you have any first edition cards, they’re identifiable by a small black circular stamp to the bottom left of the Pokemon image that says “Edition 1”, denoting that they were part of the original release in 1999.

Happy hunting, and let us know if you strike Pokemon gold. And if you do, can we be your friend?
