The newest trailer from Amazon Prime Video is out, and it’s transfixing. The leads are Orlando Bloom (Legolas in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and Cara Delevingne (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets). They play a Philo, a human detective, and Vignette, a faerie. Both are residents of Carnival Row, a Victorian fantasy city where humans and fantastical creatures live side by side in harmoney – or they did, until war forced them to leave Tír na nÓg and attempt to live amongst the humans. With the humans come repression and intolerance, and onerous laws under which the populace struggles.
Vignette and Philo rekindle a dangerous affair despite an increasingly intolerant society. Vignette also harbors a secret that endangers Philo’s world during his most important case yet: a string of gruesome murders threatening the uneasy peace of the Row.
The series comes to us from Amazon Studios and Legendary Television, and is based on Travis Beacham’s feature script A Killing on Carnival Row. Beacham and Bloom serve as executive producers along with Marc Guggenheim, René Echevarria, and Jon Amiel. It premieres August 30, 2019.
