Bryan Singer had been the chosen director of Millenium Film’s Red Sonja project, with that company digging in its heels and choosing to keep him on the project even after accusations of Singer’s illicit activities with underage boys surfaced last January. Now, though, he has been officially removed from the project, which had been on hold since February following an article in The Atlantic which investigated the topic in some detail.
The new director and screenwriter is Jill Soloway, already well known as creator of Transparent. She wrote and directed several of the episodes as well, including the upcoming musical two-hour season finale – filmed without Jeffrey Tambor (he was fired from the show in 2018 after two employees accused him of sexual harassment). Millenium Films had finally relented when it became clear that they were not going to find a domestic distributor so long as Singer was involved with the project.
It is believed that Soloway is the first nonbinary writer and director of a major comic book film. Being nonbinary, they are prospectively disconnected from the standard male/female gender stereotype, allowing them a unique perspective on the character.
“I can’t wait to bring Red Sonja’s epic world to life,” said Soloway. “Exploring this powerful mythology and evolving what it means to be a heroine is an artistic dream come true.”
Now that Red Sonja is recovering from its stalled production status, work can begin anew – though it is likely that casting will be starting over from scratch, since previous casting decisions had been Singer’s. There is, as yet, no targeted release date.
