Netflix announced that they will have a TV show based onThe Witcher, the popular Polish fantasy series by Andrzej Sapkowski. The show makes its debut in the fall of 2019.
The Netflix show will star Henry Cavill (Superman in the DCEU, Napoleon Solo in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. ) as Geralt of Rivia, a witcher, a hunter of monsters and supernatural creatures. Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who was co-executive producer for the NETFLIX superhero dramas The Defenders and Daredevil, will be executive producer of The Witcher. Scriptwriters for the new show will include Ms. Hissrich, Jenny Klein, a former story editor on Supernatural, Sneha Koorse, story editor on Constantine, Irish musician/scriptwriter Declan de Barra, (Iron Fist, Funky Fables), Haily Hall (the Starz show Power), and Beau de Mayo, story editor of The Originals.
Cavill will be joined in The Witcher by Freya Allen (Mary in the mini-series War of the Worlds ) as Princess Ciri and Anya Chalotra (the voice of Robin Loxley in the animated Sherwood, Lily Marbury in The ABC Murders) as Yennefer of Vengerberg. The Witcher is currently in pre-production; principal filming is being done in Bulgaria, with additional sequences in Hungary and the Canary Islands.
Popular worldwide, The Witcher books have been translated into 23 languages, have inspired a video game franchise, a movie in 2001 and a TV show in 2002 – which sadly lasted 13 episodes. With the production value and casting choices availabe to Netflix, we imagine the new series will do much better.
