Michelle Yeoh to Star in ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Spinoff

CBS All Access has officially pressed “engage” on development of a standalone “Star Trek” series starring Michelle Yeoh, according to Variety.

The series would put the Mirror Universe version of Captain Philippa Georgiou into the spotlight as a member of Starfleet’s Elite intelligence agency Section 31. Yeoh is also set to appear in the second season of “Star Trek: Discovery,” which debuts this Thursday on All Access.

We had commented in an earlier article that there was a good chance that there would be a spinoff Trek series starring Yeoh, and now it looks like those rumors have been confirmed.

“I’m so excited to continue telling these rich ‘Star Trek’ stories,” said Yeoh. “Being a part of this universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play. I can’t wait to see where it all goes – certainly I believe it will go ‘where no WOMAN has ever gone before!’”

The new series will be written by Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt and produced by CBS Television Studios, Alex Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment. Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth will serve as executive producers. Aaron Baiers will serve as co-executive producer along with Kim and Lippoldt. There is currently no scheduled premiere date.

CBS appears to be betting heavily on Star Trek to form the basis of their subscribership over the next few years. The as yet untitled Section 31 series is the latest Star Trek project to be put into development at All Access. Sir Patrick Stewart has also been tapped for a spinoff, reprising the role of Jean-Luc Picard, and there will be an animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks from “Rick & Morty” writer Mike McMahan.

Yeoh most recently starred in the blockbuster film Crazy Rich Asians. Geek society also remembers her for her roles in films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 1 & 2, Memoirs Of A Geisha, the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies, and Sunshine.
