Video of the Day: Sam Smith’s ‘Fire on Fire’, Theme to ‘Watership Down’

Epic fantasy begets epic music on a regular basis. Ed Sheeran’s I See Fire from Lord of the Rings comes to mind. Today’s offering is no less epic. It’s Sam Smith’s Fire on Fire, and it has been chosen as the theme to the BBC’s new animated mini-series Watership Down.

Pause the SCIFI.radio stream using the handy controller at the top of the page before watching (if you’re on mobile, you may find it at the bottom).

Watership Down is based on a book by English author Richard Adams, and despite having originally begun as a story told to his children and being animated in this new release, is not a children’s tale. Life is not kind to rabbits, and every individual knows that everything in the world is trying to kill them. One rabbit, a runt named Fiver, has psychic visions of a better life, and a trek begins by the rabbits, desperate to find a place where they can at last be safe. It’s a hero’s journey, and death is everywhere.

The video was directed by Noam Murro, and produced by Rupert Reynolds-Mclean. It was produced through the auspices of Biscuit Filmworks.

The series makes its debut on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK from 7pm on Saturday 22 December, and becomes available internationally on Netflix from 23 December.

Sam Smith’s Fire on Fire was written expressly for the new mini-series. He has said that he was inspired by Richard Adams’s classic novel to write the song that will be the theme song of the show.

Smith’s new album, The Thrill of It All, can be found here for your listening enjoyment.
