1st Look: “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 2 Trailer

The season premiere of Star Trek: Discovery’s second season is just five more weeks away. On January 17, 2019, the first episode of the second season drops on CBS All Access.

It’s full of some pretty enticing stuff. The Federation is at a turning point, with seven red flares appearing around the galaxy, foretelling the arrival of a being called the Red Angel. A very bohemian-looking Spock, played by Ethan Peck, is on the bridge of the Discovery as they face the unknown.

Sonequa Martin-Green returns as Michael Burnham, and appears still to be the central character in the on-going narrative that is the new Star Trek.  Shazad Latif is back as Ash Tyler, apparently out of the brig, back in uniform and playing a significant role.

The core surviving Star Trek Discovery cast will all be returning as well. Doug Jones returns as Saru, Mary Wiseman is back as Tilly and Anthony Rapp as Stamets. Emily Coutts and Oyin Oladejo will be returning to the bridge as crewmembers Detmer and Owosekun, and Mary Chieffo will be back in the make-up chair as the Klingon L’Rell, this time with hair.

All in all, it looks like CBS has learned a hard lesson from the first season of the series, and has brought the ship about to a new heading that gets Star Trek back on course with the original adventure in space theme of the series. “Grit Trek” is gone, replaced by the lure of the Final Frontier.

Unfortunately, it’s still only available on CBS All Access in the United States, but the rest of the world will get each episode the next day via Netflix as before. CBS All Access had only two and a half million subscribers as of August 2018, which means that Discovery’s first season was the least watched in Trek’s history.
