1st Look: “Captain Marvel” Trailer #2

In this new trailer, Brie Larson takes command of her new role as the Kree-empowered Captain Marvel.

She has fractured memories of who she was before the Kree found her, rewrote her mind and gave her a new purpose — in the war between the Kree and the Skrull. Whatever is happening to her is tied somehow to her past, and with the help of Nick Fury, she’s going to find out what it is.

If she can get him away from a cat named Gary.

Larsen as Carol Danvers is incandescent on screen. We do mean that in both the figurative and literal sense, both. She lights up the night sky as she does aerial combat, a living weapon embued with more power than anyone in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far (with the possible exception of Thanos, and while we know this film sledges in nicely between Avengers: Infinity War and whatever they’re going to call the second installment, we have no idea what role she’ll play — only that it will be pivotal).

There is so much to unpack here. There is a battle with a Skrull on a bus, Carol Danvers as a pilot, as a Kree lab experiment, as a Kree warrior, as a living breathing mystery, as a conduit of unspeakable power.

It is remarkable seeing Samuel L. Jackson stuffed into a time machine and made 20 years younger. He looks about the same age he was when he did Pulp Fiction, just with smaller hair. CG has been used to de-age actors before, with varying degrees of success, but this is so good that it stands up to close scrutiny, scene after scene. A new age has dawned in filmmaking, and being too old for a role is now no longer a thing thanks to modern technology.

Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, and debuts March 8, 2019.

Waiting for this one is going to be really really hard to do.
