Showtime Greenlights “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels”

Showtime has bought a new Penny Dreadful sequel series, called Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. The creator, writer and executive producer of the original Penny Dreadful series, John Logan, will be returning and serving in all those same roles, with Michael Aguilar (producer of Jim Carrey’s Kidding) will executive produce with him. The show is meant to go before the cameras in 2019.

Like its predecessor, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is an anthology series. It’s set in 1938 Los Angeles, a time of deep social tension and alive with Mexican American folklore. The new series will leverage a combination of the supernatural and the turbulent society of the time to create new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a genuine historical backdrop.

With social conflict comes an awareness and a certain relevance. “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will have a social consciousness and historical awareness that we chose not to explore in the Penny Dreadful London storylines,” Logan has said. “We will now be grappling with specific historical and real world political, religious, social and racial issues. In 1938, Los Angeles was facing some hard questions about its future and its soul. Our characters must do the same. There are no easy answers. There are only powerful questions and arresting moral challenges. As always in the world of Penny Dreadful, there are no heroes or villains in this world, only protagonists and antagonists; complicated and conflicted characters living on the fulcrum of moral choice.”

In short, it’s about monsters and the supernatural, but some of the monsters are us.

The original series Penny Dreadful ran from 2014 to 2016, and received 13 Primetime Emmy nominations, as well as a Golden Globe nomination for lead actress Eva Green, and it won three BAFTA Awards as well. The show’s fan base calls themselves “The Dreadfuls.”
