Netflix is set to produce a live-action series based on Nickelodeon’s mid-2000s animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Relax, this has nothing to do with M. Night Shyamalan’s horrific motion picture from 2010. Instead, Nickolodeon has hired the original creators of the animated series, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, to be the executive producers and showrunners. Production begins in 2019.
The original animated Avatar: The Last Airbender aired for three seasons on Nickelodeon from February 2005-July 2008, winning an Emmy in 2017 and a Peabody Award among other honors. The series followed main protagonist Aang and his friends, who must save the world by defeating Fire Lord Ozai and ending the destructive war with the Fire Nation. A total of 61 episodes aired.
It was succeeded by The Legend of Korra, which ran from 2012 to 2014 for four seasons and aired 52 episodes . Like its predecessor, it too was nominated for, and won, several awards – including an Annie Award, a Daytime Emmy, and a Gracie Award.
