1st Look: Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp” Trailer

After the enormous opening weekend of Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel Studios is already getting us pumped up for more microscopic adventures in the first official trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp.

As revealed in the first teaser trailer, this film takes place sometime after the events of Captain America: Civil War and presumably (spoiler alert) around the time of Infinity War, which revealed to audiences during that time that Ant-Man was under house arrest after being caught siding with Team Cap.

But, this also seems very much like a direct sequel to 2015’s Ant-Man, which introduced audiences to the origin story of thief turned hero Scott Lang (Paul Rudd). This time, it appears that mentor Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and his daughter Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) are not only becoming fugitives alongside Scott, but they are also introducing a new female superhero, the Wasp. In the words of Hope herself: “it’s about damn time.”

Also returning from the first film is Scott’s hilarious crew of outlaws, who appear to have set up a legitimate business of some sorts. All this SCIFI.radio writer hopes for are more incredible stories from Luis (Michael Peña). As well, hopefully, the other crew members get more of a chance to shine. They are driver Dave (Tip “T.I.” Harris) and hacker Kurt (David Dastmalchian).

Another theme continuing into this film is family, in both Scott with his daughter Cassie (Abby Rider Fortson) and Hank supporting the super-heroics of his daughter Wasp. Once more, they are continuing their quest to rescue Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) from the mysterious Quantum Realm.

Presumably, things will be tense again with Scott’s former wife Maggie (Judy Greer) and her fiance Detective Paxton (Bobby Canavale), since he is a fugitive once more.

New characters joining the cast are the villain Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), who has some sort of connection to the Quantum Realm, and former superhero Goliath (Laurence Fishburne).

Post the shell shock of the stakes and ending (which won’t be spoiled here) of Infinity War, it should be interesting to see how audiences respond to the next Marvel film that’s smaller in scale (pun intended). But, Ant-Man and the Wasp looks to be bringing back the self-aware comedy of the first film, so perhaps something more lighthearted will be just what shook Marvel fans need.

Ant-Man and the Wasp shrinks into theaters July 6, 2018.
