“Bright” Redefines The Buddy Cop Story

Coming in December, exclusively to Netflix, is the urban fantasy action crime thriller, Bright, and it’s set in an alternate world where Humans, Elves, Orcs, and a few other fantasy creatures co-exist. Peacefully coexist? Not so much. The film is directed by David (Suicide Squad) Ayers from a script by Max (Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency) Landis.

Will Smith stars as Daryl Ward, a Los Angeles policeman trying to take care of his family, hoping to move to a better neighborhood away from the gangs and fairies. He finds himself having to deal with a new partner, an orc named Nick Jacoby, played by Joel Edgerton (Exodus: Gods And Kings), a partnership that Ward is not happy with.

Together, the pair run across an elf, Tikka played by Lucy Fry (Wolf Creek), who is in possession of a magic wand. In this universe, magic wands are very rare, and its discovery leads the trio to be chased down by all the races who seek to possess the wand for their own purposes. This includes their own fellow officers, and the FBI’s magic division.

Over the years, there have been different twists on the Hollywood Buddy Cop trope, Kenneth Johnson’s Alien Nation being one. It’s always those little (or big) twists that make it interesting. Max Landis wrote the script, specifically for David Ayer to direct, comparing it to Ayer’s previous crime drama, End Of Watch. With a hefty budget of $90 million, this is Netflix’s most expensive film to date.

In addition to Ayer’s and Will Smith once again working together, Ayers is also working once again working with Atlantic Records for the soundtrack to Bright, possibly repeating the success of Suicide Squad: The Album.
