Tom Hardy to Star in “Venom” Movie from Sony

Sony has announced that Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, Mad Max: Fury Road) will be playing Venom / Eddie Brock in a solo movie focusing on the Spider-Man nemesis. The movie will be directed by one Ruben Fleischer, best known for Zombieland and Gangster Squad. Already, Sony has slated the Venom movie with a theatrical release of October 5, 2018.

Sony intends for the Venom movie to be the launch of a new cinematic universe focused on Spider-Man supporting characters, such as Silver Sable and Black Cat. For the past few years, Sony has also been trying to develop a movie focused on the Sinister Six, a team-up of half a dozen of Spider-Man’s enemies.

Venom already appeared in Sony’s Spider-Man 3, which was also the first live action appearance of the character. Prior to that, in the early 1990’s Marvel sold Sony the cinematic rights to Spider-Man, his rogues gallery and supporting characters.

Since 2002, they have been producing Spider-Man films. Following the release of the contentious The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony announced a creative partnership with Marvel Studios, allowing Spider-Man to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside the Avengers. Tom Holland was cast as Spider-Man for Captain America: Civil War and will appear in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and The Avengers: Infinity War.

Already, the decision by Sony to launch their own separate cinematic universe has been met with some criticism online. Though overall, it would seem the casting of Tom Hardy as Venom has been met with mostly universal praise. ??????

The Venom movie will be written by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner. Producing will be Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal. All of them worked together previously on The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Venom first appeared in the comics in The Amazing Spider-Man #300 in 1988, created by writer Todd McFarlane and artists David Michelinie and Mike Zeck.
