1st Look: “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” Trailer #2

The new trailer for Valerian dropped mere hours ago, and to be honest, this movie will be able to stand toe to toe with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and hold its own. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is the brainchild of French director Luc Besson, already famous for his masterpiece The Fifth Element.

Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories. They have a big job, helping preserve the peace and maintaining order throughout the human-inhabited universe. Valerian has a thing for his partner, though – but his reputation with regards to women precedes him, and Laureline has no patience for that. Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time – uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing all the species who collaborated to create the city of Alpha in great danger.

One thing that keeps coming up in social media is how this seems derivative of other science fiction films, but it’s actually quite the reverse – a lot of modern sci-fi cinema has its roots in the space opera that is Valerian et Laureline, which not only made its first appearance in 1967, but is said to have been at least partly inspirational of Star Wars.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets makes its terrestrial debut on July 21, 2017.
